Yay for Yarn! Intern Cali Has Arrived

I can’t tell you how good it feels to be home. After spending the last 9 months in New York City under a perpetually cloud-covered sky, this California sunshine is doing wonders for the soul. Hey, but don’t get me wrong – I love going to school at NYU and I love my newfound family of friends more than words can say – but there’s nothing like waking up to my dad’s breakfasts, seeing all of the people I’ve spent so much time missing and, OH YEAH, learning the ropes of our new family business.

During one of our routine Tuesday calls, my mom told me that she and my dad were reviving the dream they share of starting their own company together. After watching my mom’s passion for knitting develop over the years, a local yarn store couldn’t have sounded more perfect. I was constantly receiving updates and getting the inside scoop: pictures of the new work space in the upstairs room next to my bedroom, stories from their yarn crawl adventures, and the link to the website they put so much care into developing. And while I was so excited about all of this, I couldn’t help but feel a little out of the loop from 3,000 miles away. Thank goodness they asked me to intern for them this summer. I’ve been home for a little over two weeks, and I can safely report that my FOMO (fear of missing out) is long gone. Izzy Knits is in full swing folks, and I’m so incredibly happy to be a part of it this summer.

Work isn’t so bad when considering my days are spent in our home office with my parents bouncing ideas off of one another, pausing for lunches together and laughing amidst it all. I used to know nothing about yarn, but that has certainly changed after helping my mom decide which styles and colors she wants to add to our inventory. I mean seriously, yarn is no joke, and I’m consistently amazed at the many intricacies within this knitting world. If I’m being completely honest, I have yet to pick up knitting needles and I’m not sure if I foresee that in my future considering my lack of patience and frustration when it comes to attention to detail. My dad and I are alike in this way, and I’ve graciously decided to leave the process of learning to knit up to him. Watching that dude try to “cast on” is some quality entertainment.

Despite my lack of knitting abilities, I hope to be useful to Izzy Knits in other ways. I plan to work with my dad on developing social media strategies that will spread the word to younger demographics and already I’ve used my knowledge of online shopping to add details to the website. (You see those color swatches below each yarn product? Yeah. You’re welcome.) However, the thing I’m most excited to start working on is the “Knitting with Dave” video series. If you don’t believe me when I say watching him try to knit is quality entertainment, then just wait for this project’s debut.

Hey, thanks for welcoming my family into your knitting community! I can’t wait for more people to encounter the love and care my parents have to offer.

We’ll talk again soon.
Cali

Customizing the Turicum Shawl for Show Stealer Fingering

The great thing about this pattern is that, no matter what yarn you choose, you can knit until it's gone, or stop sooner, as I did, when you reach your desired dimensions. Gauge is not critical here. That makes the Turicum Shawl endlessly customizable!
