Holiday Gifts for Makers and Crafters

Last month we highlighted some wonderful knit and crochet patterns for holiday crafting and gifting. This month, we’ve got some great ideas to put under the tree (or in the stocking) for your favorite maker or crafter.

Embroidered Touches

We have a few new kits for those that embroider, or would like to. These notecard and gift tag kits include everything your favorite maker needs to create fun and unique objects:

Embroidered note card kits come in sets of 4 or 5 and includes cards with precisely cut holes for perfect stitching of the included designs, a needle, DMC perle cotton thread, adhesives, note card backs, clear vellum envelopes with envelope liners, and instructions.

Embroidered gift tag kits come in 3 special designs and include everything you need to make eight (8) gift tags, including pre-cut gift tags with precisely spaced embroidery holes, scalloped gift tag backs, foam adhesives, DMC perle cotton thread, a #20 chenille needle, and instructions.

For Our Knitters & Crochers

We have tons of great options for every budget found in our Gifts section, so we’ll just highlight a few of our own favorite ideas here, starting with our selection of books and magazines. Give your favorite knitter new techniques and project ideas for the new year with the Alterknit Stitch Dictionary, The Ultimate Knitting Book from Vogue Knitting, or the newest issues of Pom Pom Quarterly and Noro.

We also have quite a few books for our crocheters! Try the Complete Crochet Course: The Ultimate Reference Guide or a Crochet Stitch Dictionary as reference books that will always be treasured. Or check out the super cute Lalylala’s Beetles Bugs and Butterflies for amigurumi fun. If your crocheter loves flowers, try Crochet Loom Blooms.

Stuff their stockings with the best in notions! Choose from a Knit Kit (the “Swiss Army tool” for knitters and crocheters), or some colorful Locking Stitch Markers from Lotus.

When in doubt, buy yarn! Delight them with one of our Bellatrista Yarn Sampler kits that feature either Natural or Vegan yarns.

If you’re looking to spoil them rotten, we love our Natural Hard Maple Yarn Swift. It accommodates a wide range of skein sizes and yarn types, sits conveniently on any table top, and eliminates table scratching caused by clamps used to secure other types of swifts.

Every good crafter always needs more needles or hooks! We love these Lykke sets of Crochet Hooks and Double Pointed Needles. Lykke (pronouncd “lee-kuh”, not “ly-kee”), is the Norwegian word for happiness. Combing high quality materials and thoughtful design, Lykke Crafts produces stunning, durable, happy-making hooks and needles.

For Our Weavers

If your dearest is a weaver (or wants to be one!) have no fear - we’ve got you covered. We have books for project ideas and techniques. Try Weaving Made Easy, The Weaver’s Inkle Pattern Directory, or Handwoven Home to get you started.

If your weaver is new to the hobby, consider our Wee Weaver Loom Set for a bit of sampling or the Ashford Inklette Loom to make trims, tassels, bands, straps, chokers, dog leads and more.  With either you can weave simple or intricate patterns and embellish with different types of yarns, beads and colors.

If they’ve been extra good this year, surprise them with one of our larger Ashford Looms such as the Sample It loom which comes in two sizes (10” and 16”) or the 24” Rigid Heddle Loom.

No matter what you purchase for your makers this season, we hope we’ve given you some crafty gift inspiration. Our cutoff for guaranteed delivery in the US before Christmas is December 19. And we’re going to add a free gift to each order over $50 - a set of our Lotus Stitch Markers. There’s no code or coupon and the gift won’t show up in your shopping cart, but we’ll be adding them to each eligible package!

Happy gifting!

The Ultimate Dog Sweater: Take 3

by Susan Watkins May 02, 2019

A tube-shaped sweater seems to work great for some dogs (which is why it's so widely used for dog sweaters) but it’s definitely not a good fit for a schnoodle. With this sweater (Take 3), I think I've found the solution.

In one of the knitting classes I’ve taken, I remember the instructor saying, “We often learn more from our failures than we do from our successes." Let's just say, I learned a lot from my second attempt at creating the ultimate dog sweater!
